Door Handles and Architectural Hardware: The Complete Guide

Door handles, door levers, pull handles and cabinet fittings all sit under one term: architectural hardware. It covers the fittings and mechanisms, from levers and locks to pulls and hinges, that allow doors, windows and cabinetry to open, close and secure. Architectural hardware is what you touch more than almost anything else in a home. Every time you turn a lever, pull a handle or lock a door, you’re engaging with it, and that repeated, everyday contact is exactly why it matters so much. The feeling is almost subliminal, satisfyingly tactile, even when it’s not entirely conscious. Despite its diminutive size, it’s one of the most important elements in a home.

Architectural hardware shouldn’t be an afterthought. It deserves the same consideration at the planning stage as a floor plan or colour palette, not a decision made in a rush at the very end of a project.

Types of Architectural Hardware (Door Handles, Levers, Pulls and More)

Most people simply call this whole category door handles, and the term is often used loosely to cover levers, knobs and pulls alike. Iver separates these by function and form: door levers, pull handles, cabinet pulls and cupboard knobs, sliding door pulls, and the accessories that hold it all together.

Door Levers

Often searched for simply as door handles, door levers are classic, practical, and a mainstay of considered interiors today: functionality embodied in metal. Their precise mechanism means that when a door is closed, it clicks reliably into place, holding firm even against the strongest draught moving through the house. It sounds like a simple thing, but imagine a home where doors swing loose every time a window opens, or where each one must be secured with a key rather than a single, fluid motion.

The door lever is the ultimate invention: a complicated concept made to appear simple, the difficult made easy. And it’s so successful that any home would look odd without it.

Iver makes door levers of the highest quality and spec, meaning that buying one means you’re acquiring something that will last your lifetime, if not your home’s.

Pull Handles

With their simple, long and refined form, pull handles offer a more contemporary, minimalist bent than levers.

Iver’s Pull Handle range comes in a variety of finishes, like Signature Brass for heritage properties, and Chrome for futuristic ones. Brushed and Polished Brass befit both the modern and the traditional-style home, whilst the Distressed and Polished Nickel finishes, particularly in the Sarlat range, give a sense of age and history, even gravity, to spaces.

Cabinet Pulls and Cupboard Knobs

Cabinet Pulls are an effective and stylish way to elevate and bring modernity into the home space. They can be linked in with existing architectural hardware by sharing the same material, for example brass, creating cohesive spaces uninterrupted by disjointed colour schemes.

They are also versatile, working just as well on kitchen cabinetry as they do on built-in cupboards, wardrobes and bathroom vanities.

For smaller doors and drawers, Cupboard Knobs offer the same opportunity for cohesion in a more compact form. Available in matching finishes to Iver’s cabinet pulls, they bring a considered, tactile detail to cabinetry throughout the home, from kitchen cupboards to bathroom vanities.

For a softer silhouette, Half Moon Pulls, found across Iver’s Osaka collection, bring a crescent-shaped curve to cabinetry, offering a quietly sculptural alternative to a straight bar pull.

For drawers specifically, Drawer Pulls provide a longer, bar-style profile designed to sit flush against the drawer front. Available across the Osaka and Sarlat collections in finishes ranging from Polished Brass to Distressed Nickel, they extend the same considered detail from cabinet doors to drawers.

Sliding Door Pulls

There’s a particular kind of quiet confidence in a sliding door done well.

Iver offers a range of Sliding Door Pull options. From the refined elegance of the Rectangular Sliding Door Pull Passage Kit in Satin Nickel which works so well in minimal spaces, to the Sliding Door Edge Pull Rectangular in Brushed Brass, which sits neatly and flush with the door edge.

For a more sculptural take, the Puerto Flush Pull brings elongated proportion and softened geometry to a sliding or pocket door, its recessed, pill-shaped grip sitting flush within the door for a clean, uninterrupted surface. A considered detail for those seeking something quieter still.

An Iver Sliding Door Pull is a considered investment in a home’s long-term value. Its smooth, effortless motion speaks to a level of craftsmanship that reassures without ever needing to be explained.

Accessories

Beyond the pieces you see and touch, Iver’s Accessories range covers the details that make everything else work.

Iver’s Hinges range covers the most fundamental piece of architectural hardware there is: the mechanism that allows a door to swing at all. It spans Ball Bearing, Hirline and Lift Off types, each suited to different door weights and functions, and is available across finishes from Polished Brass to Matt Black to match whatever hardware they sit alongside.

Escutcheons are the flat plates that sit around the Euro Cylinder, protecting the surface behind from wear and tear. Iver’s Escutcheons come in a range of finishes designed to match and complement the hardware they back onto, like Signature Brass, Matt Black, and Brushed Gold PVD. Although their primary function is aesthetic, without an escutcheon in place, architectural hardware looks unfinished, incomplete. It works subliminally, but essentially.

Adaptor Plates allow a new backplate shape or size to sit cleanly over existing fixing holes, making it far easier to update hardware without reworking a door. Tube Latches are the retracting mechanism fitted inside passage and privacy sets, doing the quiet, unseen work of holding a door shut. And Euro Cylinders provide the locking mechanism used within Euro profile locksets, available in key/key, key/thumb and dual-function configurations to suit different levels of security.

Materials and Finishes of Architectural Hardware

Iver offers a selection of finishes to suit any space. Brass is where the category, and Iver’s own history, begins.

Caring for brass: clean with a soft, damp cloth, and avoid abrasive cleaners or alcohol-based products, which accelerate wear on lacquered finishes.

Brass Architectural Hardware

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and one of the oldest metals used in decorative hardware. Its origins are ancient, and it’s how Southern Design Group, which owns Iver, first started back in 1982, as purveyors of brass.

Brass is prized for good reason: it’s tougher and more forgiving under load than zinc alloy, it takes ageing and PVD finishes with a warmth no other base metal matches, and it carries natural antimicrobial properties from its copper content, a small but genuine hygiene advantage on every handle and knob in the house.

Today, Iver’s Signature Brass finish is hugely popular, and with good reason. It is hand-aged, so each product is unique, but what they each share is a dark, moody tonality which brings elegance and a sense of quality to the spaces they inhabit.

Polished Brass, in contrast, offers warm, golden tones with a mirror finish. Brushed Brass is finished on a polishing wheel to create its signature indentations, the muted aesthetic of which allows it to sit in the background of spaces, while its tactile surface creates quiet moments of pleasure with every touch. Brushed Brass is a sensitive finish and will naturally develop patina over time faster than Iver’s other brass options, which suits anyone who wants their hardware to age visibly alongside the home.

Brushed Gold PVD

Iver’s highly durable Brushed Gold PVD finish carries a lifetime guarantee against corrosion, such is the faith the company has in its longevity. Solid, forged brass undergoes a Physical Vapour Deposition process, where a hardwearing metal coats the form, creating a highly scratch and corrosion-resistant product.

Its golden tone feels considered, but its durability means it is also the perfect choice for beachside homes, where salty water can penetrate the architecture over time.

Chrome Architectural Hardware

Chrome is a popular choice for its understated presence. Rather than asserting itself, it reflects the space around it, melding seamlessly into an interior.

Polished Chrome works particularly well when matching hardware to plumbing ware, thanks to its glossy patina which is so popular in traditional tapware.

Brushed Chrome suits kitchens especially well, its cool tone and hazy texture pairing naturally with appliances like fridges and kettles. Equally at home in industrial-style spaces and contemporary interiors, it is a truly flexible finish.

Nickel Architectural Hardware

Nickel is not the usual choice, and that’s what makes it so special. Its tones are warmer than Chrome, and Iver offers it in three finishes, so you can choose one that best complements the other elements in your home.

Polished Nickel is durable and gloss-led. If you want to keep its finish shiny then all it needs is occasional cleaning and polishing. For a more natural appearance, it can be left to tarnish and age with time.

At the other end of the spectrum is Distressed Nickel, which boasts an attractive, tarnished patina. To make it, Iver nickel-plates solid brass hardware before tumbling the pieces amongst small stones and coating the resultant piece in satin lacquer. This process produces little glimpses of the nickel through the finish. Its mottled effect looks incredible in spaces with period features, where owners seek to celebrate the history of their space.

Satin Nickel balances silvery tones with the warmer, nickel-led ones. It sits somewhere in between Polished and Distressed Nickel. When you can’t decide, this is an excellent compromise.

Explore Designer Architectural Door Hardware and Create Your Own Project

Whether it’s through the Helsinki, Osaka or Brunswick collections, or the Sarlat, Berlin and Baltimore ranges, Iver has made its name creating beautiful architectural hardware that lasts the test of time. Its newest collection, Puerto, takes a different approach altogether: a maximalist, sculptural range inspired by the coastal architecture of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and the confident, playful language of 1970s design. What Should I Consider When Selecting Architectural Hardware?

1. Should hardware finishes match throughout a room?

Yes, in most cases. Ensure the architectural hardware you’re selecting either matches or complements the other metallic elements in the space: brass with brass, chrome with chrome, and so on.

2. Does the kit type matter as much as the finish?

Yes. Consider function before finish. Passage, privacy and entrance hardware serve different purposes. Iver’s Kits make this easier: choose any lever, knob or pull handle style, then select the Passage, Privacy or Entrance Kit to match, and every component needed for installation is included.

3. Should I choose a finish that ages, or one that stays the same?

Consider how it will age. Do you want it to patina with time, or stay looking the same? Choose a finish which delivers that long-term.

4. Does location affect which finish I should choose?

Yes. Factor in where the property sits, as coastal locations are particularly hard on hardware. Salt air can tarnish more sensitive finishes like Brushed Brass over time, so it’s worth choosing a finish built to withstand it: Iver’s Brushed Gold PVD range, for instance, carries a lifetime guarantee against corrosion.

5. What if the project needs to meet accessibility standards?

Check accessibility requirements early, especially for commercial or universally designed projects. Iver’s Accessibility range, including Baltimore Return and Oslo, is DDA compliant, which is worth flagging if the project needs to meet those standards.

6. Is there a way to test combinations before buying?

Yes. Build a moodboard before you commit. Pulling hardware, finishes and materials together in one place makes it far easier to see how everything will sit together before you buy. Iver’s Interactive MoodBoard lets you build your own board from Iver’s full range alongside complementary products, so you can test combinations before specifying anything.

7. Should hardware match the home’s architectural style?

Yes. Match the hardware to the home’s architecture, since a traditional interior calls for a different hardware language to a contemporary one. Aligning lever style and finish with the era and mood of a space keeps the whole design story consistent.

8. Should I factor in a supplier’s sustainability credentials?

Yes, it’s increasingly a genuine selection factor, not just a nice-to-have. Iver is part of Southern Design Group, a Certified B Corporation and the first architectural hardware business in Australia to hold this accreditation, meaning the business behind every product is independently assessed on how it treats its people, its supply chain and its environmental impact.
