Malcolm Project

Overview

This Millswood home has been designed to be unashamedly modern, constructed with tactile materials and flooded with gentle South Australian sunlight. The Malcolm Project, with its soft textures and minimalist design, blurs the line between form and function—offering a contemporary retreat that speaks to both elegance and everyday living.

Quiet Form

The exterior entranceway of this home serves as a teaser to what’s inside: beautifully balanced, geometric shapes made from materials which rest against each other with ease. It is a home where the colours are muted, the light is soft, and a feeling of peace and tranquillity pervades every centimetre of space.

The brickwork is a design highlight. “Light-toned, tumbled brickwork forms a tactile element throughout the home, anchoring spaces and establishing a sense of durability,” say Urban Habitats, who were the architects, interior designers and builders of this Malcolm Street home. These pale, textured bricks not only appear on the building’s exterior, but prominently inside too. They are particularly placed in the living room, where the bulk of a feature wall is finished in brick, playing host to both TV and fireplace for chilly Adelaide nights in.

Grounded Sophistication

Hard textures work with soft in the space, with various materials at play to retain a balance of comfort and elegance. “In a distinct contrast to the bricks, other material selections are soft and natural, creating a sense of warmth, sophistication and calm,” explain Urban Habitats. “We seek to create spaces with a grounded feel — modern, yet timeless — through subdued colour palettes, a focus on natural materials, and an emphasis on maximising light and balanced proportions.”

Employing the use of Iver hardware made perfect sense for a house built on detail. “We believe that good design is the sum of many thoughtful details and, given their frequent use, door handles play an important role in shaping the overall feel of a home,” say Urban Habitats. “Iver’s Bronte Handles reflect a look and feel that Urban Habitats strive to embody. They represent simplicity and durability, and have a tangible quality and function that creates a memorable experience out of a small moment.”

These small moments extend into even subtler ones – features like the Rectangular Sliding Door Pulls, its indentations discreet and refined and even details as seemingly minute as the Ball Bearing Hinges and Pencil Door Stops. Every moment in this home tells a story of curation and care, where thoughtful design choices and refined materials come together to create a space that feels intentional.
