The Sanctuary

Overview

Situated in one of Australia’s most picturesque spots, the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, The Sanctuary is part of Bayside Glamping and Co, a thoughtfully curated collection of properties that offer an immediate sense of calm and natural beauty from the moment you arrive. Inspired by the Japanese principal of wabi-sabi (the celebration of things incomplete, imperfect and transient), the house was built by the owners and completed by Homes by Penny Crompton to create spaces that are ecologically sympathetic, calming to behold and deeply, achingly inviting.

Japanese Roots

The Sanctuary is located on Narungga Country in Marion Bay, and it seeks to meld regionality with the international – most notably with Japan. “Penny introduced us to the concept of wabi-sabi – a design philosophy that celebrates simplicity, natural materials and imperfection,” say the owners. “It aligned beautifully with our eco-conscious approach and helped us create a space that felt grounded in nature while still offering indulgent comfort. Think raw timbers, earthy tones and subtle textures that echo the neighbouring farmland and native trees.”

The Osaka Cupboard Knobs in the kitchen are as sleek and refined as you’d expect from a design influenced by Japan, but their tactile surface means they offer a sense of satisfaction with every pull and press. “Luxury is in the details,” continue the owners. “Penny introduced us to Iver Signature Brass hardware, and we were immediately sold – not just on the look, but the feel. The quality is incredible. Even my dad, who’s fitted more than his fair share of door handles, has been telling his mates how good they are.”

Texture, Texture Everywhere

The property is near the sea, and a stone’s throw from Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, so a nature-led vibe was paramount in the design. Naturally-finished wood features throughout, on the worktops, doors and on the robust, lavish four-poster bed. The Brunswick Cabinet Pull on Backplate plays a textural, as well as visual, role on the kitchen cabinets; its diamond cut cross knurling giving guests an innate sense of the pastoral location. It’s a feeling that reaches you almost subconsciously as you grip and pull the cupboards open – as well as on the various doorways, where the Brunswick Pull Handles and Brunswick Levers on Rectangular Backplates are featured. It’s a clever way to keep guests connected to the rural landscape around them, without compromising on style, even when it’s pouring outside.
