Moruben Project

Overview

Overlooking Sydney Harbour’s Middle Head, the new interior of Moruben had to match up to one of the country’s most celebrated outlooks. It’s a design that tries neither to compete nor blend in, but aims instead to complement and celebrate its watery surrounds.

Refined Coastal

Moruben is situated at Balmoral Beach, Mosman, on Sydney’s prestigious Lower North Shore. “The owners had lived in the house for a long time and wanted a complete refresh, while maintaining the home’s character,” say Kurraba Interiors, who worked on the design. The palette was kept to a minimum, with off-whites and muted blues highlighting the oceanic views, as if the waves themselves have sprung indoors.

Nothing though, is explicitly about the sea – here, it is a game of subtlety; an aesthetic nod to the ocean rather than a furious racing towards it. The rumpus room, in particular, feels like a reinterpretation of the sea, with blue cabinets, backed with beach-shack-vibe tongue-and-groove, fronted with a creamy-toned sofa which curls around the room.. “In the rumpus room, brass mesh cabinet doors paired well with simple brass handles,” say Kurraba Interiors, referencing the Iver Helsinki Cabinet Pulls, which “create a subtle contrast against the blue-grey cabinetry.”

Quiet Luxury

Iver was used throughout this house’s new iteration. “As part of the update, we replaced all of the existing door and cabinet hardware and selected new handles for the custom joinery. We introduced brushed brass accents to add warmth and complement the overall design,” say Kurraba Interiors. The Baltimore Lever Round Rose and Rectangular Sliding Door Pull Passage Kit are notable highlights, “Iver was chosen for its solid construction, clean lines, classic style and quality finish. The brushed brass hardware fitted seamlessly into the design and provided a consistent, stylish look throughout the home.”

The brassy accents of the Iver pieces are echoed in the tapware seen in the laundry and bar, up in the chandeliers, and in the golden tones of timber dotted around the house. And when the sun sets, populating the sky with its orangey hues, these same brass features serve to reflect that too, reminding those within of the beauty of this location, in one of the prettiest spots in Australia.
