A Sit Down with Kate Dunn

08 April 2025

Designing a home is a deeply personal process—and for Kate Dunn and her husband, the transformation of Mulberry Manor is the result of careful planning, creative instinct, and an eye for detail.

In this Q&A, Kate shares her insights on creating a home that’s both stylish and practical, her design journey and the thoughtful Iver hardware choices that helped bring Mulberry Manor to life.

What was your vision when designing Mulberry Manor?

From the beginning, our vision was clear: to create a home that honoured the charm of the classic Queenslander while layering in a moody, modern edge. My husband and I had a strong sense of what we wanted to achieve—we spent countless hours gathering inspiration from magazines, Instagram, and anywhere beauty caught our eye.

We were especially drawn to the richness of walnut timber paired with the understated elegance of brass accents. That pairing set the tone for the entire home—grounded, refined, and timeless. The natural surrounds of Buderim played a big role too, guiding us toward a palette and material selection that felt connected to the landscape. In the end, every decision was made with intention, shaping a home that feels both elevated and deeply personal.

What are the key elements you always consider when designing a space?

For me, it’s all about creating a space that feels both beautiful and functional. It has to work for our family, but I also wanted it to be somewhere we could relax and entertain. Lighting is crucial, and the flow of a space really matters too. The smaller details—like hardware—might seem minor, but they have a big impact.

Architectural hardware plays a strong visual and functional role in Mulberry Manor. How did you approach those selections?

Given the prominence of the dark walnut cabinetry, we chose architectural hardware that would complement the space rather than compete with it. We wanted pieces that would elevate the overall aesthetic in a subtle, refined way. The Iver Helsinki Pull Handles in Signature Brass were the perfect choice—their clean lines and warm finish added a layer of understated luxury that tied everything together beautifully.

Do you have a favourite hardware finish or style in the Iver range, and why?

We’ve been living in our new home for a while now, and the architectural hardware—especially the Helsinki Pull Handles and Berlin Door Levers—has already become a conversation starter. Guests often comment on their unique design and how well they tie into the overall aesthetic.

For us, they strike the perfect balance between form and function, and really reflect our commitment to quality and considered design. The Helsinki Pulls have also elevated the functionality of our home, particularly in high-use areas like the kitchen. Their strength and durability give us complete confidence they’ll stand up to daily life. Even the handles on our integrated fridge and freezer make accessing them effortless and satisfying.

What’s one common design mistake homeowners make, and how can they avoid it?

It’s easy to get caught up in trends. It can be tempting to want your home to look like the latest magazine spread, but it’s so important to choose pieces you genuinely love and that reflect your own style. That way, it’ll feel personal—and you’re far less likely to tire of it over time.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone designing or renovating their home, what would it be?

Plan, plan, plan! And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even if you’re not working with a designer, talk to builders, suppliers—anyone with experience. Their input can save you time and money. Also, don’t rush. Taking your time means fewer regrets down the track.

What’s next for you? Any exciting projects on the horizon?

We’re absolutely loving living in our home right now! It’s been so rewarding to see it all come together and to finally enjoy the space. That said, we love building, and we’re already starting to plan our next project—which will be something quite different! It’s still early days, but we’re excited about what’s ahead.

Featured Project: Mulberry Manor

Situated in Buderim in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, Mulberry Manor is a contemporary take on the classic Queenslander. This thoughtfully designed home celebrates open, airy spaces, rich materiality, and a strong connection to nature.

Architectural hardware plays a pivotal role in elevating the home’s refined aesthetic. Iver’s Helsinki Pull Handles in Signature Brass bring a bold yet elegant statement to the kitchen cabinetry, their sleek design enhancing both form and function. The Berlin Levers on Oval Backplates were chosen for their clean, architectural lines—adding a touch of timeless style and everyday practicality.

A balance of warmth and elegance defines Mulberry Manor, where walnut cabinetry, soft-toned walls, and Taj Mahal quartzite create a rich, inviting atmosphere. The result is a home that embodies contemporary Queensland design—sophisticated, welcoming, and built to endure.
