Carrara Residence

Overview

Combining two styles of design in one home isn’t easy, but Georgie Shepherd knew how to nail the brief.

European Oasis

It’s never smooth sailing when clients meet with their interior designer, only to reveal two different ideas on how they want their home to look. But this is just what happened to Georgie Shepherd, who took on the interior design of a new Adelaide home built by Proske Architects. “The brief was a true fusion of the husband and wife dynamic,” she says. “It was to be classic-inspired, European design with a twist, but like any true duo dynamic the wife wanted intricate detailing, classic nods and natural materials throughout, while the husband, being a graphic designer, wanted this paired with surprising and edgy elements.”

Considered Details

The family had just moved out of a period property, so Shepherd wanted to soften the changeover, rather than shock the senses out of them in their new home. She did so by adding detail, “with bevel-edged, shaker-profile cabinetry with hand-rubbed, aged-brass shadow lines, and a brushed-brass inlay border around the herringbone floor,” she explains. “This exquisite detailing performs the dual function of adding refined luxury to the home, while creating a sense of the familiar to ease the clients’ transition from their previous, traditional abode.”

Solid Brass Touchpoints

Iver was the obvious choice for this transition, with the diamond cut cross knurling of its Brunswick Levers with Round Roses and Chamfered Backplates, as well as the range’s Pull Handles. The Helsinki T Cabinet Pulls, too, with their small but weighty tactility, offered both detail and subtlety at once. “The Brunswick range was used through the home,” states Shepherd. “The knurled lever gave us the textural and modern element we felt the project needed. We added the long rectangular backplate with the chamfered edging to bring a more classic sensibility.” Colour and material too, played their roles. “We used Signature Brass for the interior doors, which paired perfectly with the tapware finishes used throughout. The Matt Black on the black steel, painted doors gave a seamless look.”

Thanks to the care paid to these clever little accents, the quality of this home’s design reigns consistent throughout. “Beautiful craftsmanship, attention to detail and natural materials that will age gracefully, combine to create an enduring design that reflects the owners’ personalities,” says Shepherd, “as well as an appealing backdrop for future generations to tell their story too.
