Casa Olea

Overview

This Italian-inspired home received a modern renovation, offering a space fit for entertaining, without compromising on comfort.

Bayside Living

Overlooking the Sutherland Shire’s Gunnamatta Bay, this modern home draws inspiration from its stunning surroundings, shaping the vision behind its design. Owners Justine and Andy wanted a home that encouraged connection, giving their friends and adult children a space to gather. Studio Haus, who designed the property in the highly sought-after New South Wales address of Bulls Road, Burraneer for the couple. “They wanted a place to entertain; to host friends and family.”

Casa Olea in its previous incarnation was very different to what it is today. “Before the build, the property had a distinct Italian influence,” says Studio Haus. “The previous owners, being Italian, had incorporated strong Mediterranean design elements throughout. It featured prominent arches, decorative tiling, and a solid brick base that gave it a heavy, traditional feel.” The exposed bricks throughout felt dated and tired, and the low ceilings dampened, rather than celebrated, the glistening Sutherland Shire light. “Our goal was to open up the home and transform it into a light-filled space with distinct zones for entertaining and sharing with friends and family,” continues Studio Haus.

Modern Design Vision

The living area, which once featured multiple rooms running into each other via brick archways, has been opened up, the ceilings heightened and the glazing exaggerated to capture the light. Open shelving in the kitchen reveals the couple’s collection of artisanal ceramics, Iver’ Brunswick Cabinet Pulls ornamenting the cabinet doors with deft subtlety. In the dressing room, with its soft under-foot carpeting and fabric-lined cupboards, Iver Helsinki T Cabinet Pulls complete the home’s contemporary vision. “The detail, quality and finish options always make Iver an easy selection for us,” says Studio Haus.

The primary bedroom is calm and inviting. “The main bedroom looks out over Gunnamatta Bay,” reveals Studio Haus. While the views remain as something to admire, every room inside Casa Olea now equals them in prestige. It’s a home that feels softened, welcoming, and anchored in light and texture.
