The Avenue Project

Overview

For Sally Paterson, having the skills to design homes meant she could cater to the specific needs of her family when it came to designing her own.

Elevated and Timeless

“From the outset, my vision for The Avenue was to create a home that felt calm, timeless and quietly refined,” says Sally Paterson of Sydney interior and residential design studio Heliconia, who designed The Avenue for herself and her family to live in. “I wanted it to feel warm and welcoming, but also elevated; a home that doesn’t rely on trends, but instead feels grounded and enduring.”

She bought the property in 2022, demolished it in December 2023, and finished its reconstruction in April 2025, when the family moved back in. “We purchased the property mid-2022 and after living in it for a few months, started the design and planning process for what we wanted to create,” she states. “Being both the designer and the homeowner meant I could create something very customised to the way we live, and the layout reflects this. The home is generous in scale with strong connections between indoor and outdoor spaces, an emphasis on natural light and airflow, and a floorplan designed to support family life over time. Designing every inch of the home inside and out made the building journey incredibly personal.”

Seaside Inspiration

She describes the design as ‘Modern Coastal.’ With her practice situated on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the sea is imbued into the aesthetic—creams and off-whites, with hints of pale blue scattered about. “I drew inspiration from our seaside surroundings as well as travels through the Californian coast and the Mediterranean,” says Paterson. “The design is intentionally restrained, with a neutral, layered palette and a strong focus on materials, detail and warmth-adding elements.”

She knew that hardware was important from the outset. “Architectural hardware was never an afterthought in this project; it was considered from the very beginning as part of the overall design language,” she says. “I selected door and cabinetry hardware alongside joinery finishes, flooring and other key materials to ensure everything worked together cohesively.”

Hardware Detailing

Iver met numerous needs demanded by the project, particularly because of its superior quality. “For me, hardware is something you interact with constantly, so it needs to feel good in the hand as well as look beautiful,” explains Paterson. “Iver was a natural choice for this project because of the quality, craftsmanship and breadth of their range. We use the brand in many of our projects.”

Materials were are the forefront of her mind. “Iver’s solid brass construction was really important to me. I wanted hardware that felt substantial in the hand, and would age beautifully over time, rather than something purely decorative,” she notes. “The range of finishes made it easy to align the hardware with the rest of the material palette, and the ability to specify Iver across the entire home, from door hardware to cabinetry was key in achieving a cohesive, whole-of-home outcome.”

Considered Design

Sally scheduled both the Osaka Cupboard Knob in Signature Brass and the Berlin range’s Lever Oval in Matt Black in The Avenue, but it’s Iver’s backplates that are a highlight, with Brunswick Cabinet Pulls with Backplates in Satin Nickel, Matt Black, Signature Brass and Polished Chrome featured throughout her home. “I adore the backplates. On both the cabinetry and door handles it was exactly the level of detailing I was looking for. And the main colour I used, Signature Brass, is softer than black but still punctuates the cabinetry with contrast. I love that.”

Iver’s products helped to unify her vision. “Ultimately, Iver’s pieces felt considered and timeless, which aligned perfectly with how I approached the design of the house,” she says. “They complement the architecture and interiors quietly, adding depth and refinement without ever feeling overstated.”
