A Sit Down with Rebecca Jansma

19 December 2024

Rebecca Jansma is the Creative Director behind Rebecca Jansma Interior Design (RJID), a design studio renowned for transforming ordinary spaces into stunning, functional works of art. With over 12 years of experience, Rebecca expertly blends historical references, global aesthetics, and a deep appreciation for beauty in every project. We sat down with Rebecca to discuss her journey into interior design, her design philosophy, and how key design elements—like Iver hardware—help shape her spaces.

Tell us a little about yourself – how did you get into interior design?

I’m the head of a small, but mighty, interior design studio – and believe it or not, this is my third career. I started out with a degree in Medical Science, but after a few years in the field, I realised I was meant for something more creative. Fast forward 12 years, and interior design has become my true passion. It’s the perfect blend of creativity and practicality, and I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else.

What’s your favourite part about being an interior designer?

There’s no such thing as a dull day in interior design – each day is a new adventure, and who doesn’t love that? But the best part, hands down, is working with clients. It’s an absolute honour to be trusted with such a personal project. Transforming their ideas into spaces that truly reflect who they are is the most rewarding part of what I do. I love bringing their vision to life.

What’s your favourite room to design and why?

Without a doubt, the kitchen. It’s the heart of the home, and it’s such a hardworking space. I love to cook, so kitchens hold a special place in my heart. When designing kitchens, I focus on blending form and function, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also efficient and inviting. A well-designed kitchen can bring a family closer, and I’m a strong believer in that.

What are your current favourite trends in interior design?

We’re definitely seeing a shift toward organic, sustainable, and authentic materials. People are drawn to natural finishes that feel timeless, and I think that’s incredible. There’s also a rise in decorative details and finishes that give spaces so much personality. What I love about this trend is that it allows people to inject their unique style into their homes, making their spaces feel personal and truly theirs.

What’s your advice when clients are selecting hardware for their project?

When it comes to hardware, we always start by considering the style and finish as the main criteria. But what’s really important is that our clients genuinely love how the hardware feels. After all, they’ll be interacting with it every day.

We often call hardware ‘jewellery for your home’ because it’s that final touch that pulls everything together. It’s about finding the right balance between aesthetics, durability, and tactile pleasure.

What’s your favourite piece from the Iver range and why?

I’m a huge fan of the Osaka range. I’m a ‘minimal maximalist’ – I love clean, simple lines but also appreciate intricate details. The Osaka range strikes that perfect balance. Its timeless design, combined with the craftsmanship, adds depth and interest to any space. For me, this range brings life to a space – and that’s exactly what I look for in hardware.

Featured Project: Arch & Scallop House

Rebecca’s project, the Arch & Scallop House, is a prime example of her adventurous design spirit. Nestled near Bells Beach, this home is anything but ordinary. The design boldly combines striking forms, vibrant colours, and durable materials to create a space that’s both functional and breathtaking.

A key feature of the design is the carefully selected hardware. The Cali Cabinet Pull 256mm and Osaka Cupboard Knob, in Signature Brass, serve both form and function. Their contrasting shapes—the linear pull and circular knob—create a dynamic visual interplay that enhances the bold architectural elements of the home. The solid, forged brass construction is both reassuringly durable and refined, while the distinct finish complements the timber elements and deep tonal palette, tying the space together.
